Even if we are not medical experts, there is a way that we can save someone’s life with simple movements. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a typical method. You may have seen several articles in various media where someone saved another’s life through CPR. Even a child helped a strong adult man through CPR. As such, it can be used by men and women of all ages and can save someone’s life if they know how to do it. Therefore, Pharos would like to explain the basics of CPR.

If the heart stops functioning, the brain rapidly loses its supply of oxygen, leading to the swift death of brain cells. Therefore, it is crucial to administer CPR within four minutes after cardiac arrest occurs.

The Most Appropriate Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

- Reference: Seoul Fire Station

1. Move the patient to a safe location.

※ Perform CPR on a firm surface.

2. Check the patient’s condition by tapping their shoulders from top to bottom.

※ Avoid aggressive methods like slapping the cheeks or shaking the body for assessment.

3. Inform people around you about the patient’s condition and tell someone to call emergency services (119 or the appropriate local emergency number).

※ If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available, ask someone else to get it.

4. Check for breathing while observing the patient’s face and chest.

※ If breathing is abnormal or absent, perform CPR.

5. If the patient’s clothing obstructs chest compressions, remove it and verify the correct hand position for chest compressions.

※ Chest compressions should be performed at the lower half of the sternum (breastbone).

6. Use the heel of one hand to perform compressions.

※ Perform 100-120 compressions per minute, with a depth of 5 cm (about 2 inches) for 30 compressions.

※ Keep your arms straight and press vertically over the patient’s chest, allowing for full chest recoil after each compression.

※ Continuously verify that you are pushing deep enough and releasing fully, and if someone else is available, take turns performing compressions.

If You Want to Learn CPR Professionally

If you have to get a job that requires you to save someone’s life or to have professional knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, you can obtain a relevant certificate. There are various certificates related to cardiopulmonary resuscitation such as BLS, KALS, and ACLS. Visit the website of the Korea Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Association to learn more about various methods and test information.

Emergencies can happen to anyone. While they may not be common, there’s a chance you might encounter one or two in your lifetime. Instead of waiting for someone else to perform CPR in such a situation, step up and become the person who takes action first. Remember, knowing CPR and being able to initiate it can make a difference that someone will be forever grateful for. Let’s be proactive and prepared, because you never know when the time may come to save a life.
