Special Student Assembly

On September 3, a special student assembly was held by the In:K Student Council, and the purpose was to discuss ways to resist the attempt of the previous president Son Jong-kuk to return to Kyonggi University. Out of a total of 11,807 students, 3,070 participated in the student assembly. As assemblies require that more than 10% the student body to begin attendance, there were enough students for the assembly to be held. The assembly focused on an item raised by the student president, cross-voting with regard to the return of the previous president Mr. Son. The keynote address was given by the student president of the College of Physical Education Lee Hyun-jik, who shouted an anti-return slogan and proposed a campus march to oppose the former Presidents’ return. Especially, the crossvoting was unanimously rejected. The school march, which was well attended, strongly opposed the return of the previous president, Son Jong-kuk, to the board, with the slogan “Let’s eliminate corruption in private schools! Back off, Son Jong-kuk!” Through this student assembly, students sent the message that they will fight against the school’s corruption, and won’t be quiet anymore to the Board of Trustees. However, the directors of the board said that the opposition opinion is held by a minority of students, and that minority is trying to instigate students to rebel. The In:K Student Council, which hosted this student assembly, posted a video that demonstrated student participation. The post also included a letter on their website that stated that they want students to be a “vocal” majority, and no longer a “silent” majority. Also, before the start of the second semester, the In:K Student Council organized a sit-in protest in the boardroom to arouse students’ attention. The council’s efforts and student participation combined to make the special student assembly a meaningful event.

An Exposition by Majors

On September 4 to 5, an exposition was held by the various majors of Kyonggi University. It was created in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the In:K Student Council. The booths of a total 61 majors and 5 extracurricular programs were set up at the school. The exposition was an event intended to provide information to students interested in double majors, minors, the flexibility system of majors, etc. In particular, the flexibility system may have been unfamiliar to students, as it will be introduced from next year. The flexibility system of majors allows students to change their majors from an admission major to a different major. Then their admission majors can become minors. The speakers explained that the flexibility system of majors applied to students in the Class of 2018 because this system is aimed at freshmen starting after 2018.

In the booths of the exposition, there were students majoring in each department, so students of Kyonggi University could get answers to questions they had about the majors through them. Previously, students had to go to the website or the office of a department to find out about a major, but at the exposition they could actually get help by listening to detailed explanations and advice from students of a major who had taken the classes of the department. In the extracurricular program booths, students were informed about school institutions and programs in fun ways such as games and events. Stamp tour event were held as well as the operation of the booths of the majors and programs. The tour event gave coffee coupons to the first 800 students and generous gifts, such as iPads, GoPro Action Cams and Galaxy Buds, through a lottery. On September 5, the major exposition was also held in the main gymnasium of the Seoul campus. Due to the unfavorable matter conditions Caused by Typhoon Lingling at the time of the exposition events necessarily came to an early end. Despite the harsh weather, a total of 6,304 students participated in the exposition and 1,725 students took part in the stamp tour event. Thanks to the participation of many students, the exposition was able to finish smoothly.

University Campus Festival

The Kyonggi University festival was held from September 24 to 26. This year’s festival’s name was ‘굳굳굳’. The Kyonggi University student council asked for students’ creative opinions about how to name the festival to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the school’s foundation. Thus, ‘굳굳굳’ was the name that won the first place prize in the contest. This was an idea conceived by writing 72 in digital numbers in a vertical direction, showing the word ‘’. There were many booths open in the daytime where people could enjoy themselves in a variety of fun ways. Food trucks that could fill the hungry stomachs of students and booths that provided a variety of food and drinks decorated the campus during the festival. The Food trucks sold high-quality food that is often found in special restaurants, such as shrimp dishes and pizza, and the booths sold food items that were so delicious, it was a shame to sell them for just three days. In addition to the food booths, there were many other interesting booths. Let me introduce a few of them. First of all, there was the “Speed King” booth, which could measure the pitching speed of a thrown ball. Secondly, there was the “Inbody Inspection” booth, which was run by the Kyonggi University Clinic, and finally, the “Tarot” booth, where students could see the future. The daytime street booths were impressive as they played a valuable role in the festival. Due to the characteristics of students and the university festival, many people focused on the bar booths and celebrity performances held at night time. However, there were many interesting daytime street booths for those who did not like alcohol or were not interested in celebrities.

In the evening, all the events were performed at the grand stadium, the center of the festival at Kyonggi University. In order to enter this zone, we had to wear a “bracelet made of paper,” an admission ticket. A member of Kyonggi University was able to receive it for free, and an outsider could receive the ticket after they paid a fee. This system was introduced this year to facilitate access by outsiders. On the central stage before the performances, students spontaneously participated in gourmet and singing programs, following the presenter’s guidance. The band clubs gave a performance that we could all enjoy together that consisted of various genres of music such as pop, movie sound tracks, K-pop, etc. The singing and dancing clubs also do listed students with their own performances. Some of the guests came to the university campus festival for the performances of celebrities, such as Yang Dail, Davichi, Cheongha and Kim Bum-soo. The stage hosted important events of the school as well as showing the joyful performances. For example, student representatives had a free speech session focused on the controversy of former president Son Jong-kuk's return. They spoke actively in opposition to Son’s return. The student representatives outlined the direction of the university that students really want, as well as emphasizes the need to break the link between Kyonggi University and corruption, and the importance of improving the curriculum. With resorted to external issues, we watched videos about “Red-Circle,” a campaign aimed at preventing hidden camera crimes, and listened to what a sergeant of the Kyonggi South Local Police Agency of Suwon had to say. The “Red Circle” campaign aims to raise awareness about the crime of hidden cameras by attaching red-circle stickers, which symbolize the need to pay attention to the use of smartphones. For students at Kyonggi University, the 2019 university campus festival was significant for the high degree of unity within the organization process. At the same time, the festival played a role in encouraging students to participate, in school event, promoted awareness of problems in society and was a way to publicize our voices.
