This semester, there was more difficulty making up a timetable compared to other semesters. For that reason, some Kyonggi University students have complained on the school’s online community site. Where did the stu- dent's complaints come from?
In the first semester of 2017, reorganization of liberal arts courses took place. Accordingly, students who needed to re-take classes were inconvenienced because of new procedures such as ones for applying for the re-taking of simi- lar courses. Moreover, professors were not assigned for most of the revised classes, and to make things worse, class syllabuses were not listed so students had to register for courses without knowing who would teach the class or how the class would be organized. The school is run by the students’ tuition. Students have the right to choose what classes they will take. At this enrollment time, this was not guaranteed. For the next enrollment time, the class syl- labuses should be written on time, and we hope to take the classes that we want. In the case of registering for major courses, there were many complaints that the number of students who could take classes was significantly smaller than the total number of students in the department. At previous enrollment times, major courses with about 100 stu- dents were usually divided into two classes at different time slots. Therefore, students could plan a timetable before the beginning of the enrollment period and apply for their classes. If the class sizes did not exceed the fixed number of students who could take the class, students were registered in the classes. However, this semester, classes that should have been divided into two classes were held just in one. The school opened only one class, and if the class exceeded the student limit during the enrollment period, the university opened one more class during the course reg- istration period. As many students expected, many classes exceeded the student limit. This made students confused and amplified their dissatisfaction because students could not take the classes they wanted to take. In conclusion, students had to reschedule again. Another problem was that when the number of students in a class exceeded the limit and a new class was opened, a disproportionate number of students were in one section of the courses even though they were taking the same class. If a course must be divided into two classes because of the number of students, it is better for it to be divided before the enrollment period so that students can apply for the course in ac- cordance with their plans and so that the students in both classes are balanced. However, this semester, students are crowded into one section of some courses. Therefore, as was the case in previous semesters, a large class should be divided into two to avoid these problems. We interviewed some Kyonggi University students to find out what they think of these problems.

English Literature, Ms. K: I signed up for fewer than the required credits this semester. First, it was very inconvenient because the lecture plans came too late. In addition, major class selection was delayed because of the restricted student limits. I want major classes to be for students of that major. I haven’t been able to get all of my major credits. Please cal- culate the number of persons including double major students, minor students, and course retaking students who need to take a course.

Management, Ms. M: I felt there were too many students waiting to enter classes because the essential class organiza- tion changed for freshmen. I thought it was difficult to choose the lectures because the lecture plans arrived too late. In addition, students think it is inconvenient that standby credits are limited just to 6 credits.

There are no syllabuses on website yet.

Please check the courses are similar.
I failed changing classes :(

Is there anyone who cannot take the major courses?

I feel I'm in the hell because of waiting.
Why can't the school make the courses which fit in to the number of students?

Some department limit the number of double major students. However, most departments don’t limit the number of double major students. If there are many major students and an in- crease in the number of double major students, there will be many students who want to listen to the lectures and the application for classes will be more difficult. Your education might suf- fer because you might have to take courses that are not appropriate for you. You might not be able to take major courses because the number of places for students is less than the number of department students. There is a problem because of the mismanagement of the inflow of double major students, so the school has to calculate the total number of students carefully.

Our 6 months of studying can be changed by one click. During the next application period for classes the university must resolve the issues causing discomfort for students. The application for classes is the one way to select the lectures students want, so the school must address the complaints described above and devise alternative procedures. We carefully plan how to spend the 6 months of each semester. I think it is bad turn aside from one’s plan because of problems associated with the application for classes. We have the right to listen to the lectures we want to listen to. Lectures exist for students. Therefore, the school must consider the needs of students and ensure that the course application process serves students well.
