1. The Planning Meeting

Before writing articles, we decide who will take charge of each section. We submit a brief proposal containing our ideas to the editor-in-chief within the designated period. If our idea isaccepted, we start writing a proposal with more details. Usually, only one or two reporters write each section, with the exception of the Cover Story, in which 2-3 reporters will work on it together.

2. Writing Proposals

The purpose, introduction, body, and conclusion of each article are arranged in the proposal. In addition, extra information such as the interview or report schedule and cost and other concerns are written in the note column.

3. Writing Articles in Korean

When the editor-in-chief’s decisions have been finalized, it is time to write the articles in Korean. Then after the editor-in-chief has approved each step, the reporters go on to the stage of writing the articles in English.

4. Writing Articles in English

In the case of the English articles, we put a lot of effort into translation. We should check if there is an official English title and comply with Romanization. Internet translators are strictly prohibited, of course.

After writing the English articles, the next process is receiving feedback from our proofreader, an American professor. Even though the reporters pay attention to using appropriate grammar and vocabulary when writing articles, it is necessary to correct errors that may occur. Through this step, we are able to produce more natural and high-quality articles.

5. Design

When the writing stage is completed, we go on to the design stage. We design where and how to place the introduction, body, conclusion, and photos. Not only the composition, but

also the background color, font color, illustrations, icons, and other graphics are all designed by the reporters themselves.

6. Typeset and Design Revision

When all of these processes are completed, we send the files to the design and publishing

company and receive the draft edition. In addition, reporters check not only their own articles but also other reporters’ articles. Thus, we can change the design and typos. We try to perfect the magazine by repeating this revising process at least 8 times.

7. Uploading Articles to the KGU News Website

8. Distributing to the Newsstands on Campus

What the Media Management Department Does

The Media Department makes card news and reels to upload on Pharos' Instagram. They select about 3-4 articles per magazine to make card news and the “What happened at KGU?” series that contains Kyonngi University’s latest news. In addition, they will produce short-form videos containing the reporters’ activities. This is to attract students’ interest by reflecting recent trends.

What the planning & Marketing Department does

The Planning & Marketing Department typically manages the Pharos Blog. They write about additional information that is not included in the magazine or the reporters’ activities on our blog. In addition, they are in charge of planning all events, including the annual Pharos Pepero Day held every November and the magazine’s quiz events to advertise Pharos to students.

In this way, Pharos works hard for about 2-3 months to publish one magazine. Please look out for how Pharos will develop further in the future.
