Last September, abolition of the Graduation Preparation Committee was decided. Actually, before the abolition of the committee, a lot of students didn’t know what the Graduation Preparation Committee was, and what was their job. Also, the abolition agenda was passed without students’ input because the assembly of students that planned it last September was canceled due to a low participation rate. Because of these reasons, many students didn’t know about the abolition in detail. Therefore, the Pharos investigated the situation related to the abolition of the committee including the fundamental reason for the abolition, and how its work will be dealt with from now on.

 The Graduation Preparation Committee existed to help the graduation of students. The preparation of the graduation album was their most important task. They also notified students about schedules for shooting the graduation album, shooting spots, and clothes to be worn. Also, they selected companies to shoot and manufacture the graduation album, and chose companies for the rental of graduation caps and graduation clothes. Finally, they announced graduation information, and answered questions about graduation. Then what is the reason for the abolition of the Graduation Preparation Committee?

 We interviewed the chairperson of the 2018 Luna Graduation Preparation Committee to find out the fundamental reasons for the abolition of the committee and how future graduation affairs will be conducted.

What do you think is the fundamental reason that the Graduation Preparation Committee was abolished?

 There may be a lot of reasons, but I think the biggest reason is because there are fewer students making yearbooks. The main job of the committee is to help fourth-year students prepare for graduation, and one of the most important things to do is to make yearbooks. However, there has been a significant decline in the number of students applying for this service in recent years.

How will the committee’s work be managed in the future?

 I don’t know for sure. I don’t know the details, but I think it will be the responsibility of this year’s Student Council, In:k. I can’t say it has been decided exactly because there’s nothing set yet. After the complete change-over of the Student Council is done, the calculation of the number of people who will work and the assignment of tasks will be conducted by the Student Council.

 Please tell us something you would like to say to the students who are preparing for graduation or the organization which will take up the committee's work.

 What I felt when I worked as the chairperson of the Graduation Preparation Committee for a year is that there was a lot of misunderstanding because people had different interests. I believed there could be a bigger problem if we didn’t get rid of this misunderstanding, and I wondered if, perhaps, many social problems had developed because of this issue. I’m sure that some people will have a hard time working next year, but I look forward to next year.

 The Pharos learned that many students don’t have an interest in the abolition of the committee from the results of a survey. There are some students that didn’t know about the abolition or even the existence of the Graduation Preparation Committee. Most of the students answered that they don’t think it is a necessary organization for a university, although some students say it was regrettable because an organization that existed for the benefit of students had disappeared. Additionally, students asked the new organization to keep its finances clean, and exist to help students.

 The abolition of the Graduation Preparation Committee was put on the agenda for the assembly of students in September last year, and was passed immediately without voting or discussion due to the lack of students attending the meeting. In addition to this, the assembly of students in December could not be held because it failed to meet the required number of students of more than one-tenth. This clearly shows a low participation rate in the assemblies of students. All the agenda items to be voted on at the assemblies of students are related to all university students, so it is natural that the voting influences them. That is why more students should participate in the assemblies of students, and freely speak their opinions to the student council and school institutions, and point out what is lacking.

 The process of abolishing the Graduation Preparation Committee could have been carried out with the participation of students. However, because of students’ indifference, the committee was abolished without students’ opinions being voiced. It is a pity that students do not care about an institution until it is abolished, but what is certain is that the post-abolition steps are very important. We have to look at how the new organization will do the work of the old committee. The survey show that students are not very interested in the committee. However, based on this incident, it is clear that we must be able to express our thoughts and opinions clearly, as well as participate in the assemblies of students with greater interest. Also, we will have to work hard to make a more advanced school together.
