“Espresso” means “express” in English. This refers to not only the quick extraction speed but also the speed with which the coffee is consumed. In Italy, the home of espresso, people simply drink espresso before work, before school, or in their spare time. For this reason, cafés in Italy usually have a standing area instead of a large seating area. Even if there are seats, the standing price and the table price are different. Currently, many espresso bars are emerging in Korea. However, these might be uncomfortable places for people who prefer to enjoy coffee in a relaxed atmosphere. Especially, people who seek out Instagram-worthy cafés may feel repulsed by espresso bars. Therefore, Pharos is going to introduce an espresso bar in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, to clarify the differences between the two styles of café culture.

Located in an alley in Haenggung-dong, At the End Espresso has red bricks and an open lounge next to a coffee bar that catches the eyes of those passing by the alley. The narrow seats where you can sit are not suitable for long periods of time while enjoying coffee, and it’s uncomfortable for many people to come in at once. When you enter the café , there is the bar where baristas are making coffee. Customers can enjoy their coffee standing right in front of the baristas. In addition, the alley, decorated with stones and grass just outside the entrance, is another space where you can enjoy coffee while standing since there are not enough tables available. You have to drink the coffee and return it right away when you visit At the End Espresso. Because espresso is a small drink, the rotation rate of the bar is high, just like in Italy. However, you can see many people here stacking up several glasses of espresso, drinking them one after another. The reason for this situation is that people got used to the Korean culture of relaxing at a café for a long time. The lack of seats and the rule to return the glass immediately after drinking a small coffee can give a sense of alienation and rejection for some people. However, considering the original purpose of an espresso bar, low-priced and fast-paced, it’s an excellent environment in which to feel the sentiment of Italy, the home of espresso.

Espresso bars, now easily found in Korea, can cause discomfort and awkwardness to people who are still only familiar with Korea’s coffee culture. However, espresso bars can be a better place for those who can’t enjoy “a cup of coffee” in fast-paced modern society. Considering the original meaning of espresso and the distinct culture of Italy, you will be able to have a more meaningful and unique experience in an espresso bar.
