Recently, it is easy to see people around us who are suffering from Call Phobia around us. According to a survey of 518 adult men and women conducted by job portal 'Job Korea', 53.1% of the respondents said they felt Call Phobia. In other words, more than one in two adults suffers from Call Phobia.

So what is Call Phobia? Call Phobia is a combination of Call and Phobia, in which people feel more nervous than necessary before a call, such as not only avoiding a phone call, but also feeling fear and anxiety when making a call. Therefore, they prefer to communicate by text message, email, or mobile messenger instead of talking on the phone. The concept of Call Phobia first came from John Marshall's 1994 book 'Social Phobia.' More than a decade has passed since the concept of Call Phobia became known, but the problems and seriousness began to draw attention again as the MZ generation, which has been using smartphones and messengers since elementary school, became adults and active members of society.

Although it is not officially listed by the World Psychiatric Association, Call Phobia is a phenomenon that illustrates the changing ways of communication and the problems that arise because of this. As we have entered the era of communicating through our fingertips, opportunities to face others have decreased, and non-face-to-face transactions and untact marketing such as delivery applications and unmanned ordering machines have increased. As a result, face-to-face communication has decreased, and people have come to think that calls are burdensome.

It can be considered as a new phenomenon and change that appeared in the MZ generation, which has become familiar with non-face-to-face interaction and SNS, but if there is a social problem, the story will be different. Young employees working in companies are losing confidence in their work calls due to these phobias, which is then followed by communication inefficiency. In fact, according to a survey of 1,042 office workers on "the most feared moment of new employees' work life," 39.4% of the respondents ranked receiving a phone call, ranking second.

Call Phobia Self-Diagnosis

 Even if I know the number, I don't answer the phone without good reason.

 I talk less than others when speaking one-on-one.

 I like to use unmanned ordering machines in brick and mortar stores.

 SNS customer counseling is more convenient than phone counseling.

 There was a time when I delayed my work due to inconvenience in conversation.

 Being asked questions is stressful in itself.

 I prefer to search for information instead of asking people.

If you checked more than four boxes, you are suffering from Call Phobia.

If Call Phobia persists, it can cause difficulties in interpersonal relationships or work life. Rather than habitually avoiding calls, you should train to overcome them. So how can you train to overcome Call Phobia? First, practice calling people close to you for an hour a day. If you have a hard time talking on the phone with others, try practicing alone. Second, plan your delivery in advance. It is to rewind the simulation in advance. Third, focus on the call in an independent space. If you feel uncomfortable in your daily life, it is a good idea to consult an expert without hesitation. Try to overcome Call Phobia carefully rather than feeling fear and avoiding others.
