Photos of Steve Jobs, Andy Warhol, and Alfred Hitchcock – these portraits are familiar to everyone. They are the works of Albert Watson, a master of photography. Albert Watson, an artist whose name comes to mind when discussing iconic portraits, is holding his first solo exhibition in Korea from October 8, 2022 to March 30, 2023 at the Hangaram Art Museum in Seoul Arts Center.

Albert Watson is one of the 20 most influential photographers in the world and is called an icon in the world of photography. From 1977 to 2022, he worked with the fashion magazine Vogue, shooting more than 100 covers. He has also shot covers for other famous magazines such as Rolling Stone, Time, and Harper’s BAZAAR. Albert Watson, who has been blind in one eye since birth, has captured his own world by looking at subjects with only one eye. Along with thorough research, he interviews his subjects in order to plan his photographs. This exhibit lets you experience the world that he has drawn with one eye.

Albert Watson’s exhibition consists of two chapters. The first chapter is titled A CHRONICLE. This chapter is divided into four sections: A Scotsman in LA, Hitchcock, All about Watson, and Colors of Skin. You can see the various topics that Albert Watson researched and pursued throughout his life from the moment he started walking the path of a photographer.

A Scotsman in LA shows Watson’s work before he became a full-fledged commercial photographer after moving to Los Angeles. It consists of early works produced while practicing photography as a hobby while traveling in the United States.

Hitchcock shows when he started taking his first commercial pictures. The first celebrity he shot was the master director Alfred Hitchcock. With this work as the beginning, Watson faced a turning point in his career and jumped into the world of fashion photography in earnest.

All about Watson covers a variety of photographic subject areas that Watson pursued, such as portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and experimental photography.

In Colors of Skin, you can get a glimpse of the wit of nude works that go back and forth between famous paintings and car- toons. Even without fancy decorations, you can see the skillful technology, delicate composition, and various expressions of texture.

The second chapter is titled WATSON STUDIO. This chapter consists of three sections: Behind the Scenes, Watson Studio, and Digital Runway. In this chapter, you canencounter various behind-the-scenes stories from Watson’s studio.

The first section of Chapter 2 is Behind the Scenes. It contains stories about the production background, filming process, and behind-the-scenes stories of eight of Watson’s most iconic works.

In Watson Studio, viewers can see test shots and Polaroid photos he worked on. In this section, you can directly experience the work process both in the studio and on site.

The finale of Watson’s exhibition is the Digital Runway. You can see Watson’s works that have not yet existed in real life. Viewers can enjoy the end of the exhibition in a space filled with songs selected by Watson himself.

Appreciating the world-recognized works in Watson’s exhibition gave me a completely different feeling than just looking at pictures on the Internet screen. I was able to get a glimpse of Watson’s intentions and beliefs by looking at not only the work but also the story, process, and behind-the-scenes cuts. In this exhibition, we can enjoy his most famous photos, from his early works in the 1960s to his latest work in 2022, which will be unveiled for the first time to the outside world, as well as photographs from various fields. If you are curious about his world through one eye, visit his exhibition held at the Seoul Arts Center.
