Recently, the poor conditions of zoos have caused whale deaths. It has been reported that a beluga whale died at the Lotte World Mall Aquarium because the aquarium provided an inappropriate environment for animals. However, zoos can allow people to see animals from all parts of the world and help young students with work and study. Opinions are divided over the issue of animal rights with regard to zoos. In response, Pharos wishes to hear the opinions of two students who have conflicting views on maintaining or abolishing zoos.

What do you think about locking animals in zoos and marketing them for commercial and educational purposes?

Proponents of Zoos : Zoos now operate as commercial ventures, of course, but they are actually more purposeful in protecting endangered animals. Zoos also contribute to regional development. In addition, there is an academic aspect because young children can see and learn about animals that are not normally seen outside of zoos.

Opponents of Zoos : In most cases, the purpose of a zoo is not to treat animals ethically, but to make economic profits. There are increasing cases of endangered species dying in a place called the ecological zoo, which intends to protect endangered animals. In fact, a study found that 70% of endangered species protected by zoos experience unnatural death, not natural.

What do you think are the advantages of keeping zoos?

Proponents of Zoos : Zoos are a means of protecting wildlife. Endangered animals, in particular, have great difficulty living in the wild. Due to the lack of food and many unfavorable conditions such as climate and environment, if protected by zoos, they can live more comfortably than in the wild by being provided with a proper environment and food.

Opponents of Zoos : Maintaining zoos can help young children emotionally. If children can spend time with animals during their early years, where direct observation or experience is important, they can develop a sense of ethics, such as the value of protecting animals.

What do you think are the advantages of abolishing zoos?

Proponents of Zoos : If zoos are not properly maintained, the animals will die because the environment is not suitable, as has recently been shown in the media. However, the benefits of maintaining zoos are greater than this. Animal rights also develop when wild animals that are not adapted to the wild go to zoos and are provided with a better environment than dying outside.

Opponents of Zoos : In the past five years, 2159 out of 3,000 endangered species have died from diseases or sudden deaths, not natural causes in zoos. Abolishing zoos will prevent many animals from dying in inappropriate environments for the economic benefit of people. Abolishing zoos can also prevent cases of unethical breeding for economic benefit.

What do you think about replacing zoos with a shelter for animals?

Proponents of Zoos : Even now, the zoo functions as a shelter. Rather than switching to a shelter, it would be better to maintain the zoo's current purpose so that children could see the animals while still complementing the shelter's function.

Opponents of Zoos : If the environment of the existing zoo can be improved, it would be better to replace it with a shelter instead of a zoo. However, there have been many deaths recently at a place called an ecological zoo that had supposedly improved the zoo environment. If ethically correct environmental laws are enacted and then zoos are replaced with shelters, it will be possible to create ethical and safe environments for animals.

Please tell me your thoughts on how you want animal rights to be managed with regard to zoos and how to move forward.

Proponents of Zoos : Animals are living creatures and are dignified beings. They need to be respected and protected. In particular, we hope that endangered animals will be protected by protection agencies and that more efforts will be made to increase the population and create an environment suitable for animals to adapt to.

Opponents of Zoos : The transition to the shelter is a good direction, but there are already many ecological zoos with poor environments. Therefore, it would be good to bring in robot animals, which have been a hot topic recently. Robotic dolphins are very similar to real dolphins, so it is difficult to distinguish them with the naked eye. Although the initial investment costs are high, I think that introducing robot animals is one of the best ways to solve the ethical problems of animals.

The pros and cons of protecting zoo animals’ rights are stated above. For many decades, zoos have been close to us and we can see animals at any time, which has provided people with the opportunity to learn. However, many zoo environments are inadequate and even poor, leading to the sudden death of many animals. It is possible that the zoo’s function will be replaced in the future by a new direction, such as the establishment of shelters instead of zoos and the replacement of real animals with robotic animals.
